Medway Hymn 2012
An exploration of the curious relationship between the monumental temple built, but never finished by the strange Jezreelite sect in late 19th Century Gillingham, Kent; and the motorway bridge across the River Medway at Rochester, another structure built on a sublime scale, dating from the mid 20th century and beneath which, the buried stones of the demolished Temple now lay.
Once a dominating presence in the landscape, the temple and any significant traces of the sect have been almost totally erased.
This project grew out of a day spent recording the vibrations of the 'ghost' of the temple through the modern bridge columns using contact microphones. It was ultimately supported and funded by the Medway Council Arts Development Team for a solo exhibition at the Rochester Art Gallery, centred on the film 'A Medway Hymn', and including a range of other works in various media that also explore themes of erasure, dissapearance and loss in the physical and cultural landscape.
